What Spin: ILWU

Boy oh boy, I can not believe how gullible does the press think the average person is. The spin on the port stopage or should I say the one day strike is amazing.

From Reuters:

West Coast ports closed by worker protest

Thats the title and the story. The ports on the west coast were closed for a one day strike. Nothing special about this except for the spin. Now here is the spin.

"Thursday as some 10,000 dock workers went on a one-day strike to protest the war in Iraq, port and union officials said."

"Longshore workers are standing down on the job and standing up for America," said ILWU International President Bob McEllrath. "We're supporting the troops and telling politicians in Washington that it's time to end the war in Iraq."

There is the spin. We are on a strrike to support the troops. What a load of crap. The stopping of shipping of what could be vital supplies for the troops, not to mention other supplies that will eventually end up in the middle east. Are all on a one day at least delay because the union wants to show their support for the troops by protesting the war. Com'on what crap is this?

'LEVERAGE CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS'

But port officials cast doubts over the war protest motive.

PMA's Getzug said the action came two months prior to the expiration of the current labor agreement.

"Today's actions raised the question of whether this was an attempt to leverage contract negotiations," he said in a statement.

He added that the work stoppage was illegal under the PMA's contract with the ILWU.

There is the truth. Port officials have it right. This was a show. A show to show port authorities that the union has some power over the docks. All in the name of gainning a one up you in the up coming union talks.

I would like to know that if this strike is illegal under the current agreement are they going to prosecute those who are responsible.

More then likely they won't because they are afraid of a major shut down. But hey won't this open up more jobs for illegals to do that Americans won't? (sarcasm to the max)
