SANTA FE -- Hospital emergency room workers will begin asking some patients for immigration documents.
The new questions will determine whether federal money can be used to pay for the care of undocumented immigrants.
New Mexico qualifies for $5.1 million in new federal funds for the 2005 fiscal year.
Some immigrant-advocacy groups are concerned that the program will undermine efforts by immigrants to seek medical attention.
Patients can qualify for the program if they don't have legal documents such as a green card or a valid nonimmigrant visa.
They also must be able to prove they were born outside the United States.
