Immigration bill outrages activists
They say measure that’s passed House could send them to jail for helping people who are undocumented

A tough new illegal immigration bill that just cleared the U.S. House of Representatives this month has outraged advocate groups and church relief agencies who fear their work with new immigrants could become illegal if the measure passes the Senate and becomes law.

The bill, co-sponsored by Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), proposes erecting a 698-mile wall across one-third of the U.S.-Mexico border, turning illegal immigrants into felons and making it a felony to shield or offer support to undocumented immigrants.

That provision is unnerving organizations such as Catholic Charities immigrant services in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

"We are one of two departments mandated by the church to help the stranger," said the agency's head, Carmen Maquilon, adding that the mandate also comes from Bible passages such as Matthew 25. "It comes from Rome. It's almost the essence of what our department stands for."

Critics, including the National Immigration Forum in Washington, D.C., call the bill the harshest piece of anti-immigrant legislation in 70 years. Supporters say it would help bring under control what some call anarchy at the border that has allowed the number of undocumented immigrants to swell to 11 million, including 100,000 on Long Island, according to immigration experts.

Msgr. Rollin Darbouze of Holy Innocents Church in Flatbush, a heavily Caribbean neighborhood, said he would not stop helping immigrants, legal or otherwise. That "would be inhuman. It would violate my creed as a religious leader." (HMM ... ADMITINNG HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE RULE OF LAW. CHARITABLE OR SUBVERSIVE?)

Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies in Washington said he had little sympathy for groups that help undocumented immigrants.

"These are people who are knowingly helping, knowingly promoting illegal immigration," he said. "The very people complaining about this are the very ones who helped bring about the illegal immigration problem in the first place" by offering them services.

King downplayed any thoughts of police or the FBI raiding churches or social service agencies looking for workers assisting undocumented immigrants. He said that is not the intention of the bill, which is aimed at people who help bring undocumented immigrants into the United States.

"Nobody is going to be going to churches locking people up," he said. "If they are facilitating immigrants coming into the country illegally, that's another thing."

But critics said the language of the bill is so broad it could affect thousands of church workers, private agency employees and even everyday citizens who assist undocumented immigrants. Workers who teach English classes, operate day laborer hiring centers or offer water to immigrants stumbling across the border clearly could be affected, said Michele Waslin of the National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic advocacy organization in Washington.

Violations "could involve taking your undocumented nanny to the store, to the doctor's appointment," Waslin added. The bill mentions penalties of up to 5 years to 20 years in prison, depending on whether the activity is for profit.
